Howard Tobochnik '13 (photo) went 4-0 at 149 pounds to take first place among 16 competitors in his weight class at the RIT Invitational Sat., Dec. 3. Tobochnik was seeded third in the bracket and defeated both the first and second seeds on his way to the title. He won 6-4 in a tie-breaker in the championship match after winning twice by pin, then downing the second seed, 8-1, in the semi-finals.
Wesleyan also had a trio of second-place individual finishers on its way to a second-place posting as a team among nine attending squads. Wesleyan has been attending the event since 2000 and second place equals the Cardinals' highest team finish, first achieved a year ago. Taking runner-up status for Wesleyan was Nick Scotto '13 at 141 pounds with a 2-1 mark while Jefferson Ajayi '13 at 184 and Luke Erickson '12 at 197 also secured second place with marks of 3-1 and 2-1, respectively. Four other Cardinals took third place - Ben Schwartz '15 at 125, Maika Nagata '13 at 133, Tom Oddo '12 at 157 and Kyle Roosa '13 at 174. Wesleyan had two additional placewinners as Greg Tanenbaum '13 took sixth at 125 as did Ryan Sblendorio '15 at 165.
