Kyle Roosa '13 (bottom photo) and Joey Schwartz '14 (top photo) picked up important pins at 174 and 133 pounds, respectively, as two of the Cardinals' four winners during the opening dual match of the 2011-12 campaign at home Sat., Dec. 10 vs. RIC. But the Anchormen claimed six of the 10 bouts to conteract the Cardinal pins and came away with a 24-19 victory.
Wesleyan trailed, 11-0, after the first two bouts but came on strong with three straight wins, started by Roosa's pin in just 1:35, followed by a major decision by Jefferson Ajayi '13 at 184 (15-3) and a decision by Luke Erickson '12 at 197 (11-4) to spot the Cardinals a 13-11 edge. RIC took a pair of decision in the next bouts for a 17-13 lead before the pin by Schwartz in 2:44 put Wesleyan back on top, 19-17.
RIC then captured a major decision to retake the lead, 21-19, leaving the outcome of the match to one of the premier matchups of the day - Michael Trasso of RIC vs. Howard Tobochnik '13 of Wesleyan. Trasso is ranked #2 in New England while Tobochnik is ranked #3. As expected, it came down to the closing minute but Trasso held on for a 9-7 win, securing the team triumph for the Anchormen.
Wesleyan resumes action in the annual North-South Duals hosted by Ursinus Sat., Jan. 7. There the Cardinals expect to take on four opponents, who will be announced shortly.
