Shasha Brown '13 Picks up 21 Points, 9 Assists to Pace Men's Basketball Past Trinity, 73-58, in NESCAC Matchup

Taking control of the game with as 12-2 run early in the second half, the Cardinals moved out to as much as a 21-point lead at Trinity Sat., Jan. 7, before settling for a 15-point win, 73-58.  Wesleyan stands 11-3 on the year and 1-1 in NESCAC play.  Up next is the first home NESCAC weekend with visits from nationally ranked Little Three rival Williams Fri., Jan. 13 and top-ranked, undefeated Middlebury Sat., Jan. 14.

With the score 34-30 in Wesleyan's favor 1:32 into the second period, five Cardinals contributed to a 12-2 run that spotted the visitors a 46-32 lead at the 14:51 mark.  The Cardinals never led by less than double-digits the rest of the way and by as much as 21 (65-44, 4:56 left).  Shasha Brown '13 (#11, main photo) closed out with a game-high 21 points and dished out nine assists for a near double-double.  He also had six boards and five steals.  Jason Mendell '12 (#34, photo insert upper left), with three three-pointers, added 16 points while Mike Callaghan '13 had 12 and Bryan Galvin '15 10 off the bench, including two valuable treys.  Callaghan led the squad on the glass with eight caroms.

Neither team led by more than five points during the opening 20 minutes and the score was tied five times, the last time at 27-27 before the Cardinals ended the half with a 5-1 spurt for a 32-28 lead at intermission.  A three-pointer by Galvin with 1:04 to go in the frame gave Wesleyan the lead for good, 30-28, and Brown closed out the scoring for the period with a layup.
