Cardinals Fall in Tight Battle with Amherst, Lose to Williams as Well in Little Three Matches
Coming ever so close to ending a long dry spell vs. Amherst, the Cardinals dropped an exciting 6-3 decision to the visiting Lord Jeffs Sat., Jan. 28 during the annual Little Three matches. Six of the nine battles went a full five games with four of those matches going Amherst's way, two of them by deciding games of 14-12 and 12-10. Most prominent for the Cardinals was #1 John Steele '14 (main photo), who downed his Lord Jeff rival in three games, yielding just 12 points. Five-game winners for Wesleyan were #3 Dan Sneed '15 (photo insert lower right) and #6 Alex Nunez '14 (photo insert upper right).
Wesleyan fell short of Williams, ranked 10th nationally, 9-0. Again Steele was Wesleyan's most successful player against the Ephs, falling 3-2 after building a 2-1 edge. Zander Nassikas '14 took a game at #4 as did Blair Corbin '15 at #9.
Ahead for the squad is the annual NESCAC Championship which begins Fri., Feb. 3 at Trinity. The top eight teams after the first round will continue to compete at Trinity on Sat. and Sun., Feb. 4-5 while the botto three squads will play in consolation matches at Wesleyan Sat., Feb. 4.
