Laura Getchell '14 (#7, right-side photo) tossed a sparking four-hitter and struck out a career-high 11 batters to lead the Cardinals to a 4-3 win over visiting Hamilton Fri., March 30 in the first game of a three-game NESCAC West series. The teams were slated to do battle in a double-header Sat., March 31 to close out the series but the games have been postponsed to Sun., April 1 due to bad weather.
While Getchell was doing her best to control the Continental bats, Sam Epstein '12 (#11, left-side photo) stroked a pair of hits to drive in two runs to power the Cardinal attack. Her double into the left-centerfield gap in the 1st inning plated Tori Redding '13, who reached on an infield single and moved to second on a grounder that was misplayed by Hamilton. Epstein made it 2-0 in the 3rd with a hard ground single on the right side, bringing home Allee Beatty '13, who led off with a bunt single, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Beatty had two hits in the game, stole two bases to give her 17 on the year, and knocked in a run in the 4th to put the Cardinals ahead for good, 4-3. Jill Gately '15 opened the 4th with a double to deep centerfield, and scored on a grounder by Ashley McLaren '13 that was misplayed by Hamilton. McLaren headed to second base when the late throw home eluded the Continental catcher. McLaren went to third on a groundout and scored when Beatty deposited a single over second base.
Hamilton had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 4th, coupling a walk with three of its four hits and some heads-up base running. Hamilton had just one other hit in the contest, that in the 7th as Getchell set down the Continental lineup without a runner reaching over the first three innings while striking out six. Hamilton got a runner to second base in the final frame with two outs but Getchell fanned the final Continental batter to end the contest. Her previous high game for strkeouts came against Williams a year ago when she whiffed seven.
