Ashley McLaren '13 (#12, left side photo ) and Averill Roberto '13 (#8, right side photo) scored two goals apiece while Roberto also had an assist for a five-point game in Wesleyan’s 4-0 victory over the visiting Hamilton Continentals Sun., Sept. 16, giving Wesleyan a 2-0 all-time record against its NESCAC rival. McLaren took over team goal-scoring leadership with her pair, giving her three on the season.
Tori Redding '13 posted her first shutout of the year, recording two saves, but did not face much pressure from Hamilton. For the majority of the game, the action took place firmly in Hamilton’s half of the field, with Wesleyan outshooting its opponent by a 26-2 margin. This dominance was thanks in large part to the outstanding play of McLaren, who consistently led the Cardinals’ offense into Hamilton’s half of the field and had 10 shots on the day, six of them on net. Her first goal of the day, upping Wesleyan's lead to 3-0, came off a two-way passing combination after a penalty corner in the 53rd minute. Her second goal came with just 4:29 remaining as she redirected a pass by Vanessa Block '15 into the net. Roberto, who got credit for the game-winner, scored just 8:22 into the first half by tipping in an initial shot by Taryn Murray '13. Eight minutes later, Roberto made it a 2-0 game by poking home a ball right in front of the Hamilton cage again, this time assisted by Mackey Hemphill '15.
With the victory, the Cardinals’ record improved to 1-3 overall with a 1-2 NESCAC record. The Cardinals will continue their playing action Sat., Sept. 22, on the road against NESCAC rival Williams.
