Men's Crew Has Top Finish in Club 8 at Textile River Regatta, 2nd in Open 8 to Begin the Fall - Adds Win in Collegiate 8 at Housatonic
Competing over an approximate 3.5-mile course, Wesleyan had tremendous success in both the Club 8 and Open 8 races during the Textile River Regatt in Lowell, Mass. Sun., Sept. 30 to inaugurate the fall head racing season. The Cardinals' two entries in the Club 8 took first and third of 13 with a winning time of 19:22.6. Representing the Cardinals in the victorious first boat was cox Martin Villanueva '16 and rowers Bryce Hollingsworth '13, Ben Record '15, Sam Hoefle '13, David Hinds '13, Peter Martin '14, Stephen MacNeille '15, Ethan Currie '15 and Colin Russell '15. Racing to third place was the crew of cox Max Dietz '16, Sam Factor '14, Nick Petrillo '14, Ryan Heffernan '16, Carter Peterson '13, Peter Cornillie '15, Sam Giagtzoglou '16, Cole Chiumento '14 and Chris Nanda '16. The Open 8 entry, a mixture of six members of the "A" and two from the "B" boat from the Club 8 entries with a new cox, grabbed second of eight boats with a best time of the day, 19:08.6. That crew featured cox Grant Nikols '13, Bryce Hollingsworth '13, Ben Record '15, Sam Hoefle '13, David Hinds '13, Ryan Heffernan '16, Nick Petrillo '14, Peter Martin '14 and Ethan Currie '15. Wesleyan also had a boat entered in the Open 4, taking 21st of 27 entries.
The squad moved on to the Head of the Housatonic Regatta in Shelton, Conn. Sat., Oct. 6. The last time the Cardinals competed in the Head of the Housatonic in 2010, they captured the title in the Collegiate 8 (non-IRA) event. Wesleyan repeated the performance with a first- and third-place effort in a field of 12 entries including traditional rivals Williams and Coast Guard. Representing the Cardinals in the victorious first boat (photo, top boat) with a time of 14:14.8 over the approximate 2.7-mile course was cox Grant Nikols '13 and rowers Bryce Hollingsworth '13, Ben Record '15, Tenzin Masselli '15, David Hinds '13, Sam Hoefle '13, Trevor Michelson '13, Peter Martin '14 and Ethan Currie '15. Racing to third place (photo, bottom boat) was the crew of cox Martin Villanueva '15 and rowers Sam Factor '14, Nick Petrillo '14, Peter Cornillie '15, Carter Peterson '13, Ryan Heffernan '16, Chris Nanda '16, Cole Chiumento '14 and Colin Russell '15, timed in 14:36.3. Wesleyan also had a boat entered in the Collegiate 4, taking sixth of 15 entries while the Cardinals won the Collegiate Novice 4 in a field of five boats.
The next action for the squad takes place Sat. & Sun., Oct. 20-21 in Boston, Mass. at the prestigious the Head of the Charles Regatta.
