Sweeping the three doubles matches to get off to a 3-0 start in their season-opening match Sun., Sept. 9 at Nichols, the Cardinals got the necessary two singles victories to wrap up a team triumph for a 5-4 decision. Lauren Jacobs '15 (right side photo) captured a solid 6-0, 6-4 win at #3 to wrap up the conquering as Jessica Seidman '16 (left side photo) had claimed a win at #4 earlier, taking the first set 6-0 before her Bison rival retired due to injury. Though Nichols took the remaining four singles affairs, the win belonged to the Cardinals.
Jacobs had teamed with Madison Hartley '15 for an 8-4 victory at #1 doubles while Seidman paired with Suzanne Gallo '13 for an 8-3 win at #3. The tandem of Genevieve Aniello '13 and Maddie James '16 came through with a hard-fought 8-6 win at #2.
Wesleyan had just one dual match remaining on the fall slate and that came up at home Fri., Sept. 14 when Babson ventured to Middletown. Babson was a 7-2 winner over Nichols earlier this fall and defeated Wesleyan by an 8-1 count. Seidman was the lone Cardinal victor, taking a 6-2, 7-5 decision at #4. Wesleyan had defeated Babson, 7-2, when the teams met last spring but a lack of three starters from that 2011-12 squad, with #1 Grace Smith '14 and #4 Kiley Robbibns '14 studying abroad, and the graduation of #2 Sarah Miller '12, left the Cardinals a bit diminished.
Up next for the team is a trip to Conn. College Sun., Sept. 16 for a tournament with participants Wesleyan, Conn. College, Oneonta St. and Endicott.
