Field Hockey Falls in Regular-Season Finale at Trinity, 2-1 - Cardinals Seeded 7th in NESCACs
Ashley McLaren '13 (#12, photo) netted the only goal of the second half with almost 28 minutes left in the contest, cutting host Trinity's halftime lead to 2-1, but the Cardinals were unable to come up with the equalizer and the Bantams held on for the 2-1 win in the regular-season finale for both squads Wed., Oct. 24.
Both teams advance to the NESCAC playoffs which start Sat., Oct. 27. Trinity, as the fourth seed with a 7-3 conference mark, will host fifth-seeded Amherst in the opening round. Wesleyan tied with Conn. College and Williams for sixth place in the standings and none of the tie-breaking procedures could be used to separate the squads. As a result, a random selection process had to be used and Wesleyan got the seventh seed. The Cardinals will face second-seeded Tufts in Medford, Mass. at 1 p.m.
At Trinity, McLaren scored off a penalty corner inserted by Taylor Wells '15. For McLaren, it was her seventh goal of the year, putting her in second place on the squad. Wells notched her fifth assist of the campaign. Trinity had assumed a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals just 4:15 apart midway through the first period.
Shots favored Trinity in the game by a 10-6 margin as did penalty corner by a 6-4 figure. The Cardinals and Bantams each took four shots in the second half with Wesleyan producing three corner opportunities to two for Trinity. Wesleyan keeper Tori Redding '13 came up with five saves in the contest.
