Cardinals Rally in Each Half to Overcome Deficits but Late Push Carries Albertus to 82-73 Win
Recovering from a 21-12 deficit to take their first lead of the game with 3:40 to go in the first half, 29-28, on a layup by Mike Callaghan '13 (#44, main photo), the Cardinals tried to do much the same in the second half of their contest at Albertus Magnus Sun., Nov. 25. After falling behind by 11 early in the second period as the Falcons went on an 11-2 run in the opening 3:15 to pull out to a 46-35 lead, Wesleyan again recovered and used a 21-11 run of its own over the next eight minutes to get within a point at 57-56 with 8:51 to go. But the Cardinals went cold over the next four minutes, outscored 14-4 as Albertus rebuilt its 11-point advantage, 71-60, and never let Wesleyan get closer than eight the rest of the way.
Callaghan logged his third double-double of the season with a team-leading 23 points and 12 rebounds. Joining him solidly in double-digit scoring were Shasha Brown '13 (#11, photo insert lower right) and Derick Beresford '13, each with 17 points. Brown added five assists and five rebounds while Beresford had three assists, four caroms and two steals.
Albertus outscored Wesleyan by 15 at the free-throw line, making 26-of-41 attempts while Wesleyan went 11-for-21. The Falcons hit a brisk 8-of-20 three-point tries while the Cardinals managed just 4-of-17 shooting from long range. Albertus collected 10 blocks on the day, contributing to Wesleyan's 41.4 percent shooting from the field.
Wesleyan is back on the road for its next contest, heading to Mass. College of Liberal Arts Tues., Nov. 27. The game will feature LiveStats and possibly a webcast. Click < here > to get to the links.
