Just as they had done to start the MCLA game at the beginning of the week, the Cardinals used a titanic scoring run to decimate Mitchell in the consolation game of the Hockenbury Classic at Norwich Sun., Dec. 2, coming away with an 82-52 victory. Mike Callaghan '13 (#44, right-side photo) was named to the all-tournament team, his second such honor this season, as he had 12 points and eight rebounds vs. Mitchell after leading Wesleyan with 20 points in the opening-game loss to Babson. Rashid Epps '16 (#00, left-side photo) came off the bench and pumped in 15 points along with 15 rebounds, 10 of them on the offensive glass, to lead the charge against the Mariners.
Wesleyan trailed by 11, 24-13, with 8:48 left in the first half. What took place over the next 18:30 was almost unbelievable. Wesleyan went on a 50-7 scoring run to hold a 63-31 advantage with 10:52 to go in the game. The Cardinals led by at least 24 the rest of the way. Wesleyan shot nearly 60 percent from the floor in the second half and made four of its seven three-point tries during the period. Wesleyan shot 44 percent and had only one three-pointer in the opening 20 minutes, yet still led 36-28 at intermission. Mitchell was limited to 33 percent shooting in the second half and missed all seven treys. Norwich had only beaten Mitchell by five, 73-68, in their first-round contest. At MCLA this past Tuesday, Wesleyan began the game with a 32-4 run en route to a 99-84 win.
Joining Epps and Callaghan in double-digit scoring for Wesleyan against Mitchell was Shasha Brown '13 with 12 and BJ Davis '16 with 11. Brown also had six assists while Davis cashed in on four steals.
Wesleyan returns to action Wed., Dec. 5 with a trip to Westfield St.
