The 12th-ranked nationally Cardinals flexed their collective muscles during a quad-match at Williams Sun., Feb. 10, by winning 22 of 30 bouts against their three rivals and coming away with three substantial wins. Wesleyan downed Oneonta St., 36-9, then beat up on Western New England, 48-9, before knocking off the host for a second time this year with a 34-12 decision. Collectively, the Cardinals amassed 10 pins, led by 125-pounder James Hamilton '16, 184-pounder Jefferson Ajayi '13, and 197-pounder Josh Roometua '16 (right side photo), each with two. Kyle Roosa '13, at 174 pounds, had the only technical fall for Wesleyan while Howard Tobochnik '13 (left side photo) had a pin and two major decisions at 149 pounds. He improved his seasonal record to 20-1 in dual matches and 29-3 overall during the regular season. Both Ajayi and Roosa are right behind with 18-3 dual-match marks and 27-4 overall records. Tobochnik received NEWA Co-Wrestler of the Week Laurels while Roometua was named Rookie Wrestler of the Week by the NEWA.
On the day, six Cardinals posted 3-0 marks - Hamilton, Nick Scotto '13 (141), Tobochnik, Roosa, Ajayi and Roometua. The three team victories upped the Cardinals' record to 14-7 on the year as each of the squad's setbacks has come against a team currently ranked among the top-11 nationally. With just one dual match left on the schedule, that at home Sat., Feb. 16 against Oswego St., Wesleyan has clinched its fifth consecutive winning campaign. The team is 61-37-2 over the last five seasons with both a NEWA tournament title (2012) and a NEWA duals crown (2011) to its credit.
