Women's Squash Posts Highest-Ever Finish at NESCAC Championship with Sixth-Place Showing
Placing one spot higher than their seed with a sixth-place showing, the Cardinals were led by #8 Nell Schwed '14 (photo insert upper left) and #9 Liza Bayless '16 (main photo) during the NESCAC Championship hosted by Trinity Fri.-Sun., Feb. 1-3. It is the highest-ever finish for the squad after taking seventh in 2011. Both Schwed and Bayless went 3-1 over the weekend as the team posted a 2-2 mark.
The key to Wesleyan's best-ever NESCAC tournament performance was avenging a 5-4 loss to Bowdoin to begin the second semester by taking a 5-4 decision over the Polar Bears in the first round of consolations. Both Schwed and Bayless came through with 3-0 victories. Also posted wins vs. Bowdoin were #1 Mary Foster '14 (3-0), #3 Lauren Nelson '15 (3-2) and #7 Danielle Craig '13 (3-1).
That match followed an 8-1 loss to #2 Williams with Bayless the lone winner behind a 3-0 triumph. In the last consolation match against Amherst with a chance to place fifth, Wesleyan fell to the Lord Jeffs for the third time in three weekends in another extremely close match despite the final team score of 8-1. While Schwed got the win, 3-0, Wesleyan top three players - Foster, Annie Maxwell '15 and Nelson - all fell by 3-2 counts while the next three in the lineup - Grace Zimmerman '13, Claire Miller '15 and Kar-Anne Tan '14 - all took a game from their Lord Jeff rival.
Next up for the team is a new event - the Division III Individual National Championships, to be hosted by Bowdoin Fri.-Sun., Feb. 8-10.
