Jeff Blout '14 (main photo) tossed five innings and allowed just two hits and two earned runs with eight strikeouts in the opener of a twin-bill against Bethany Lutheran College in Tucson, Ariz. Mon., March 11, but Wesleyan could only push across one run despite nine hits to just three by BLC as the Vikings captured the first game, 4-1. In the nighcap, Nick Cooney '15 went four innings, yielding five hits and one earned run with five Ks as the Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the 7th and won it in the bottom of the 8th on Guy Davidson's '16 (photo insert upper left) RBI single over second base, plating Steve Moran '13, who led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Katofsky '16.
Davidson went 3-for-4 in the second game and drove in three of the Cardinals' five runs in the 5-4 victory. He also lashed a two-run triple during a three-run 2nd inning. Matt Sorkin '15 drove in Davidson with a single for the third run of the frame. But Wesleyan trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the 7th. Wesleyan loaded the bases with no outs in the inning and after a forceout at home, Sam Goodwin-Boyd '15 lofted a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Sorkin to make it 4-4. Peter Rantz '16 tossed the 8th inning for Wesleyan, and despite allowing a leadoff single, got the next three outs to collect his first career win when Davidson did the honors. Moran had four hits in the game and scored twice.
Jordan Farber '16 had three safeties in the first game and Andrew Yin '15 added a pair and scored the lone Cardinal run in the top of the 1st as he singled and eventually scored on a double-play groundout by Donnie Cimino '15. But that was all the runs the squad could muster as Wesleyan stranded eight in the game.
Wesleyan is back in action Tues., March 12 vs. Marian in a single game as the 15-game swing to Arizona moves into its third day.
