Su Pardo '16 Racks up 12 Strikeouts En Route to 3rd Shutout of the Year with 7-0 Win over Western Conn.
Pitcher Su Pardo '16 (main photo) struck out seven of the first Western Connecticut batters she faced and finished the game with 12 as Wesleyan went on to post a 7-0 softball victory Thurs., April 11. It was just the second Wesleyan win over Western in the series, which favors the Colonials, 7-2.
Pardo was dominant in raising her record to 9-0 on the year with 100 strikeouts in 69 innings of work on the season. She allowed just one hit over the opening five innings, that a soft liner into left field to lead off the 4th. Pardo had to quash a Colonial rally in the 7th to preserve her third shutout of the year as Western got its third and final hit of the game after a walk with a double to left center to get runners to second and third with no outs. But Pardo finished the game the same way she started by striking out the side to strand the runners.
Wesleyan carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 6th before erupting for five runs to put the game on ice. A leadoff triple to right by Allee Beatty '13 (photo insert upper left), who went 3-for-4 in the contest, was followed by a squeeze bunt and RBI by Ashley McLaren '13 for a 1-0 Wesleyan lead in the 1st inning. The Cardinals added their second run in the 3rd on back-to-back doubled by Tori Redding '13 and McLaren.
Wesleyan gathered seven hits in the 6th inning, the biggest one coming from Jill Gately '15 (photo insert lower left) as she slashed a bases loaded triple into right field to drive home three runs to make it a 5-0 game. Gately then scored on a groundout to first base by Amanda Roosa '16. Three straight ground singles brought in the final Wesleyan run with pinch-hitter Julia Reed '15 getting the RBI.
Wesleyan won its 16th game in the last 19 outings while Western lost for only the third time in its last 11 games after opening the year 0-11 during its trip to Florida.
Wesleyan was to head to Bates for a double-header Sat., April 13 for its next action, but the games have been postponed indefinitely due to weather. As a result, the next games for the squad come up Mon., April 15 in a double-header at Albertus Magnus.
