Blair Ingraham '14 (#18,
left side photo) picked up the game-winning goal and made a couple of key defensive stops late in the game as homestanding Wesleyan held off a furious comeback attempt by the Bates Bobcats in a 2-0 NESCAC victory Sat., Sept. 21.
Ingraham got the scoring started for the Cardinals with 15:13 left in the first half when she picked up a loose ball to the right of the Bates goalie and fired it in from 10 yards out for her third goal of the season. Taylor Wells '14 was credited with the assist.
Amber Bruckner '14 (#10, right side photo) made it 2-0 with 11:17 left in the first half. Wells and Anna Howard '15 got the assists off a Cardinal corner.
The Cardinals outshot Bates, 6-2 in the half, in addition to picking up four corners.
Bate had eight corners in the second half but was unable to get a shot on goal. The Cardinals had four shots on goal in the half but spent most of the period playing solid defense.
Wesleyan goalie Sara Grundy '16 (#65, upper middle photo), who finished with two saves for her first career shout, had a couple of big stops in the second half coming way out of the net. An open net at the 18:30 mark in the second period presented a scoring opportunity for the Bobcats, however, the shot went wide past the left side of the goal.
Wesleyan returned to action Tues., Sept. 24, visiting Mount Holyoke in non-conference play. There the undefeated Lyons (8-0) scored the game's lone goal in the 49th minute, making it hold up in the 1-0 victory. The Lyons had a small 14-12 margin in shots as Grundy made seven saves while the Cardinal defense added two defensive saves to turn aside nine of Mount Holyoke's 10 shot on net. The Cardinals put nine of their 12 attempts on goal.
Wesleyan takes its act to Hamilton Sat., Sept. 28 as the team resumes conference play. The game will feature LiveStats.
