Three Cardinal newcomers and a team co-captain inaugurated the 2013 fall campaign in fine fashion by taking titles during the Middlebury Invitational Sat.-Sun., Sept. 14-15. There was no team scoring as seven colleges (Bates, Brandeis, Middlebury, Skidmore, Trinity, Tufts aand Wesleyan) were represented in the field as draws of 16 were arranged for "A", "B", "C" and "D" singles along with "A" and "B" doubles.
Michael Liu '17 (far left in photo) went 4-0 to capture the "C" singles crown, winning 7-5, 6-3 in the title match. Greg Lyon '17 (far right in photo) swept through the "D" singles bracket and secured the title with an 8-4 pro-set win over teammate Charlie Seifer '15. In "B" doubles, the pair of Stephen Monk '15 (second from left in photo) and Cameron Hicks '17 (second from right in photo) progressed through the field and improved score-wise with an 8-6 first-round win, an 8-5 quarterfinal victory, an 8-3 semifinal win and a 8-1 title conquest.
The Cardinals also had two other semifinalists in addition to Seifer as Ben Hudson '15 made the semis in "C" singles and the doubles team of Alex Rachlin '15 and Seifer made the semis in "B" doubles.
Next up for the squad is the opening dual match of the season and it'll be a tough one as Wesleyan travels to Little Three rival Williams, the defending NCAA Division III champion, Sat., Sept. 21.
