Finishing off a strong flurry in the Bowdoin box in the 18th minute of the season opener Sat., Sept. 7, Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead over its host when Madeline Keane '16 (#12, right side photo) put home a shot, but a Bowdoin goal in the final minute of the half sent the teams to the lockerroom deadlocked at 1-1.
Despite nine saves by Rachel Hobert '16 (#0, left side photo), as Wesleyan faced a 19-6 shot deficit, the Polar Bears got the only goal of the second period in the 65th minute and kept Wesleyan at bay for the final 25 minutes to secure a 2-1 NESCAC triumph. Bowdoin now stands 16-1 against Wesleyan all-time in games played in Brunswick, Me., with the lone Cardinal victory coming by a 3-2 count in 2010. It was the seventh consecutive game between the rivals that has been decided by one goal or less as the teams tied, 1-1, in 2008. Three of the last seven meetings have gone into overtime.
Up next for the Cardinals is a home non-conference contest against Babson Sat., Sept. 14. Surprisingly it will be the first-ever meeting between the squads and the game is slated for a webcast, which can be viewed by clicking < here >.
