Cardinal Defense Rock-Solid Against #2-Ranked Amherst, But Lord Jeffs Capture 1-0 Little Three Win

A strong defense effort by the Cardinals against a powerhouse Amherst squad, ranked second natonally in Division III and undefeated this season while riding a 32-game unbeaten streak over a three year span, went for naught as the Lord Jeffs escaped with a 1-0 Little Three triumph Sat., Oct. 19.  While the Lord Jeffs controlled the opening period with a 9-2 shot margin and the game's lone goal off an unsettled situation in the Cardinal box in the 14th minute, Wesleyan fought back with an 8-4 shot differential in the second half, but could not get one past the Lord Jeff netminder.

Wesleyan goalie Emmett McConnell '15 (#20 in photo) faced just three shots on net during the contest, coming away with two saves as the Wesleyan defense, spearheaded by the efforts of Ben Bratt '16 (#4, heading ball) and Charle Gruner '17 (#18 in photo) helped control the Amherst attack throughout the contest.  Still Wesleyan put only two of its 10 shot attempts on net over the course of the game.

Wesleyan takes to the pitch again in a pivotal NESCAC matchup Tues., Oct. 22 at Trinity.  The Cardinals need to make up ground against Middlebury, Williams and Bowdoin over the final three contests in order to secure a first-round NESCAC home contest.
