For the second time this season, Matt Lynch '15 (#12, main photo) scored an overtime goal in a NESCAC game to make an instant winner of the Cardinals, this time at Conn. College Wed., Oct. 30 in the regular-season finale. In each case, the contest was scoreless until Lynch turned the trick. He becomes the first member of the team with multiple game-winning goals in 2013. At the other end of the field, keeper Emmett McConnell '15 (#30, photo left side) came through with seven saves in posting his sixth shutout of the year while extending his streak of shutout minutes to 347:13 over a four-game stretch.
The Wesleyan win combined with Williams' loss to Hamilton in its last regular-season game gives the Cardinals the #2 seed in the NESCAC tourmament behind Amherst. That brings Conn. College to town for the second meeting with Wesleyan in four days as the #7-seeded Camels will be the Cardinals' first-round opponent Sat., Nov 2. The game will be webcast.
Conn outshot Wesleyan, 17-10, in the game which Lynch ended just 1:44 into the first overtime, collecting a great feed from Omar Bravo '15 and breaking past the Camel defense, then lofting a chip shot over the Conn keeper from 15 yards out on the right side. The win avenged the only loss by Wesleyan against Conn in the last 15 meetings when Conn produced a 1-0 victory in Middletown in 2012. Wesleyan rode a 13-game win streak over the Camels into that outing. Wesleyan now leads the series 29-8-2.
When Wesleyan defeated Colby in double-overtime back on Oct. 5, Lynch scored the winner with 3:45 left in the second extra period.
