Ben Bratt '15, Brandon Sousa '16 & Charle Gruner '17 Grace All-NESCAC Men's Soccer First Team - Bratt Also All-NE
Following a 9-6-1 season that featured a 7-3 NESCAC record, good enough for the #2 seed in the NESCAC tournament, Wesleyan placed three stalwarts on the all-NESCAC first team. Ben Bratt (#4), who anchored the stingy Wesleyan defense from his middle back spot as the Cardinals allowed just 12 goals in 16 games with eight shutouts, moved up the second team a year ago. Bratt also found a spot on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England South all-star second team. Middies Charlie Gruner '17 (#18) and Brandon Sousa '16 (#8) made their first appearances as all-NESCAC. Both scored a pair of goals during the season while Sousa added two assists and Gruner had one.
Also standing out for the Cardinals throughout the year was goalie Emmett McConnell '15, who earned the starting role for the first time and led the NESCAC in save percentage with a .873 figure. His 0.62 goals-against average ranked third and he registered seven shutouts. On offense, Wesleyan was led by Dylan Hoy '17, who posted three goals and three assists for nine points. Chris Kafina '16 added three goals with an assist.
Of the Cardinals' 16 contests in 2013, 10 were decided by a 1-0 score, two of them in overtime. Wesleyan was victorious in seven of them. Wesleyan had no seniors in its starting lineup in 2013, boding very well for the 2014 campaign.
