Cardinals Roll Past Brandeis, 217-35, Winning 15 of 16 Events, Then Edge Trinity While Falling to Bates

Winning 15 of 16 events during their opening meet of the 2013-14 campaign at Brandeis Sat., Nov. 16, the Cardinals rolled to a 217-35 victory behind the four-win efforts of Angela Slevin '15 (main photo), Roxy Capron '14 (photo insert lower left) and Serena Zalkowitz '17.  Slevin and Capron were part of Wesleyan's winning 200 medley and 200 free relays while Slevin also captured the 200 free and the 200 back.  Capron was the winner of the 100 and 200 breast.  Zalkowitz was the champ in both the 50 and 100 free while also joining Slevin and Capron on the winning relays.

Other Cardinal individual titlists included Li Yan Yao '16 in the 100 back and 200 IM, Martha Smith '17 in the 200 fly, Natasha Cucullo '15 in both the one-meter and three-meer dive, Anna Lu '17 in the 500 free and Alexa Burzinski '15 in the 100 fly.

Next for the squad was a trip to Bates Fri. and Sat., Nov. 22-23 for a meet with the Bobcats as well as Trinity.  The bulk of the meet took place on Saturday while the three-meter dive was conducted Friday evening.  With Slevin standing out for the Cardinals, Wesleyan edged Trinity, 149-144, but fell to Bates, 218-81.  Slevin had three individual wins vs. the Bantams, capturing the 500 free, 50 back and 200 IM.  She was the overall champ in the 500 free and second overall in the other two races behind Bates. Her 500 free time of 5:10.17 clipped the second-place finisher from Bates by .07 seconds as Slevin made up 2.38 seconds in the final 200 yards for the triumph.  The Cardinals had top efforts vs. Trinity in nine of 16 events, including the final 200 free relay in which Trinity was disqualified due to a scheduling mishap.

Wesleyan is right back in competitive mode Mon., Nov. 25, hosting Amherst in the home opener.  The meet will be webcast starting at 5 p.m.
