Amber Wessells '14 (#22, left side photo) broke a 64-64 tie at the 1:15 mark of the second half with a three pointer from high on the left side, giving Wesleyan the lead for good as the Cardinals hung on to defeat the visiting St. Joseph Blue Jays, 70-66, Sun., Dec. 1. The victory improved Wesleyan's all-time record vs. St. Joe to 12-1.
Each team generated a reasonable lead in the contest, Wesleyan with a 23-14 edge in the opening period and St. Joe, 54-45 at the 13-minute mark of the second half. The Cardinals narrowed the gap to two, 54-52, two minutes later on a three-pointer by Dreisen Heath '15 and a pair of inside baskets from Kaylie Williams '16 for seven straight points. Though three baskets by St. Joe, one a trey, pushed its lead back to seven, Wesleyan use an 8-0 run to take a 62-61 lead with 4:20 to play. Heath had four of the eight points. Holding a 64-61 edge, Wesleyan was tied when the Blue Jays bagged a trey with 1:45 left. After retaking the lead on Wessells three-pointer, the Cardinals added three free throws to move ahead 70-64 with :16 to go before the Blue Jays scored a final basket.
KellyAnn Rooney '14 (#11 right side photo) took game-high honors in points with a career-best 22, going 7-for-10 from the field and 3-for-5 on trey along with 5-of-7 shooting at the line. Of her 22 points, 19 came in the first half. Williams added 12 points and seven rebounds while Jess Cherenza '15 had 10 points and a game-high 11 boards.
