Agbon Edomwonyi '16 & LaDarius Drew '15 Combine for 4 of Cardinals' 5 Top Finishes During Wes Invite II -Team Finishes Home Slate in Wes Invite III, Then Hits Boston for Activity Four Times
With LaDarius Drew '15 (left side photo) capturing both the 60m dash and the 400m run, while Agbon Edomwonyi '16 (right side photo) made short work of winning the shot put and the weight throw, Wesleyan produced five first-place finishes during the Wesleyan Invitational II Sat. Jan. 25. Nine teams took part in the festivities. Joining Drew and Edomwonyi with a title was Yuon Flemming '15 behind a stong effort in the 60m hurdles. Wesleyan had entries in just 10 of the 18 events as the bulk of the Cardinals' distance corps spent the day in Boston competing in a meet at Boston University. There, Will Dudek '17 was the top Cardinal in the mile race, finishing 84th of 176 mainly Division I entries with a time of 4:24.59. In the 5000m race, Evan Bieder '15 led the way for Wesleyan with a 34th-place performance among 84 entries, timed in 15:10.89.
Wesleyan closed out the home meet season Sat., Feb. 1, hosting the Wesleyan Invitational III. Drew had a pair of third-place performances in the 60m and 200m. Yuon Flemming '15 had the top finish by a collegian in the 60m hurdles. Sam Roth '13 nailed down third place in the mile. The Cardinals' 4x400m relay of Luca Ameri '15, Drew, Wesley Layug '17 and Kris Luster '17 took top honors among 11 participating quartets. Edomwonyi's third-place toss in the shot led the team in the field events.
Next up for the squad was a trip to the Boston area Sat., Feb. 8 where some Cardinals took part in the MIT Invitational while others competed at BU during its Valentine Invitational. The best efforts for the men came at MIT where Flemming grabbed fourth in the 60m hurdles and Shane Bernard '15 took fourth in the triple jump. Fifth-place efforts came from Luster in the 400m and Paul Brauchle '17 in the 1000m. At BU, Roth came within .03 seconds of the school record in the 1000m, running a 2:31.15 for 28th place among 87 entrants. He was seventh among Division III competitors.
Wesleyan was back in the Boston area at the Tufts Cupid Invitational Fri.-Sat., Feb. 14-15. With 25 teams involved, the Cardinals top finishes came from Drew on the track in the 60m as he placed ninth. Edomwonyi was eighth in the weight throw while Shane Bernard '14 got ninth in the triple jump.
Wesleyan returned to the Boston area for another meet, competing in the New England Division III Championships at MIT Fri.-Sat., Feb. 21-22. Two Cardinal entries accounted for points as Edomwonyi grabbed fifth in the shot put and the distance medley relay of Dudek, Ameri, Roth and Bieder grabbed sixth. Wesleyan's seven team points tied it for 19th among 25 scoring teams.
The Cardinals did not score in the next outing, the New England Open Championships Fri.-Sat., Feb. 28-March 1 at B.U. Only Roth competed for the Cardinals and he again flirted with the school record in the 1000m while placing 14th with a time of 2:31.79.
The final regular-season event for the squad was the ECAC Div. III meet Fri.-Sat., March 7-8, also in Boston, Mass. at the Reggie Lewis Center. Bieder picked up two team points for the Cardinals with a seventh-place finish in the mile.
Wesleyan heads outdoors for the start of the spring campaign Sat., March 22, hosting the Mini-Meet Invitational to inaugurate action on the newly refurbished Andersen Track.
