With seven of the Cardinals' 16 entries placing among the top four in their respective weight class, Wesleyan collected 84 team points to finish third of nine squads represented at the Williams Invitational Sat., Jan. 4. Springfield, with five champions, outdistanced the field with 135.5 points while Simpson took second with 94.
Top for Wesleyan individually for the second straight tournament was James Hamilton '16 (bottom photo) as he returned to his weight of a year ago at 125 pounds and went 2-1 to capture second place among nine entrants. His two wins came by fall and major decision while he lost a three-point decision in the finals. The Cardinals had four grapplers take third with Ryan Sblendorio '15 (top photo) going 5-1 at 174 pounds, capturing three of his five victories via pin along with one major decision. Also nabbing third was Matt Pelton '17 at 141 pounds; Keonmin Hwang '16 at 157 pounds; and Alex Cannon '14 at 165 pounds. Wesleyan's two additional placers were Zach Larabee '16 at 157 pounds and Chris Siracusa '16 at 149 pounds as each came in fourth.
Wesleyan inaugurates its dual-match season Sat., Jan. 11 with the annual North-South Duals hosted by Ursinus. The Cardinals will likely have four dual matches during the festivities with opponents still TBA.
