Inaugurating the dual-match season in the annual North-South Duals hosted by Ursinus Sat., Jan. 11, a short-trooped Cardinal squad came away with a 1-3 mark while facing two national top-30 squads. Wesleyan's win came against King's (PA), 37-18, while the squad dropped matches to #8 Delaware Valley, 43-0, and #22 Ursinus, 35-6. The Cardinals also fell to the Merchant Marine Academy, 30-9.
Wesleyan, competing without a 197-pounder or 285-pounder, surrendered 12 points via forfeit in each match. Three additional matches vs. King's were forfeited by the opponent. Thus, of the 29 matches wrestled, the Cardinals came out on top eight times, led by Chris Siracusa '16 (main photo) and Ed Pierce '17 (photo insert upper left) as both won twice. Siracusa was one of two Cardinals to succeed against Ursinus, winning a 5-3 decision at 149. Joining him with a decision was 174-pounder Ryan Sblendorio. Siracusa also posted a decision vs. King's and dropped two tight decisions to his Delaware Valley and USMMA opponents. Pierce picked up a major decision vs. King's and a 2-1 victory vs. USMMA. Other Cardinal winners were Matt Pelton '17 with a pin at 141 vs. USMMA; James Hamilton '16, who had a pin vs. King's; and Taran Carr '16, who came through with a pin vs. King's.
The Cardinals will take on three local rivals in their next action as they head to Trinity Sat., Jan. 18, facing the host, WPI and Roger Williams, which is ranked 16th nationally, in a four-team affair.
