Wesleyan University will serve as host of the 2014 NCAA Northeast Regional Wrestllng Tournament Sat. and Sun., March 1 and 2. This is the third time in the last nine years that Wesleyan has hosted a wrestling regional for qualification to the NCAA Championships. This is the second year for the Northeast Regional. It was held at WPI in 2013.
With the revamped NCAA format, six regionals are held across the country with the top three finishers in each of the 10 weight classes advancing to the NCAA Championships, this year to be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Fri.-Sat., March 14-15. In the past, when Wesleyan hosted in 2006 and 2012, the tournament was confined to member of the New England Wrestling Association with members Bridgewater St., Coast Guard, Johnson & Wales, Norwich, Plymouth St., RIC, Roger Williams, Southern Maine, Springfield, Trinity, Wesleyan, WNE, Williams and WPI. In those tournaments, the champions automatically advanced to the NCAAs along with a handful of at-large selections. The new format opens up and standardizes the qualification process while adding four teams to the field - Ithaca, SUNY Cortland, SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Oswego - to make it an 18-team event.
The tournament will be held in Bacon Field House with competition starting at 11 a.m. Saturday and at 10 a.m on Sunday. The qualifying matches for the NCAA to decide the top three places will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Ticket prices are $10 for adults each day and $5 for children and students with IDs.
