Mary Foster '14 Reaches Division III Tournament Semifinals but Returns Home in Time for Match with St. Lawrence

Representing Wesleyan in the first Division III individual tournament hosted by Bowdoin Fri.-Sun., Feb. 7-9, Mary Foster '14 (photo) won her first three matches, all by 3-0 scores, to reach the main draw semifinals.  With the Cardinals slated to play a home match against St. Lawrence Sun., Feb. 9, Foster left the tournament at Bowdoin to return to Middletown, thus defaulting her final two matches to claim fourth place in the 32-player draw.  Also in action at Bowdoin for Wesleyan were Annie Maxwell '15 and Claire Miller '15.  Each went 0-2 in the tournament.

Against St. Lawrence, ranked 19th nationally, Wesleyan came up a 5-4 loser, saddled without the services of #2 player Lauren Nelson '15, who was sitting out the match due to injury. Wesleyan took four matches among the bottom five rungs with Miller, Miranda Lipsky '14, Hannah Plon '14 and Bridget Doherty '16 all winning, 3-0, while playing up a spot from their usual position in the lineup.  Wesleyan came into the match ranked #21.

Wesleyan's next action will be the annual Howe Cup, hosted by Princeton this season.  Wesleyan is seeded fifth in the "C" (Walker Cup) Division and will take on NESCAC nemisis Bowdoin Fri., Feb. 21, in the first round. The Cardinals have fallen to the Polar Bears twice this season, 8-1 and 7-2.
