Nick Cooney '15 (#21, right side photo) tossed a five-hit shutout while striking out nine and walking just one to pace the Cardinals to a 9-0 win in game one of a double-header vs. Macalester Thurs., March 20 in Tucson, Ariz. Wesleyan used a six-run 7th inning to put the game on ice, leading 3-0 heading into the last inning. The Cardinals produced six of their 11 hits in the contest during the 7th including an RBI single by Ellis Schaefer '17, his second hit of the game. Also with a pair of hits in the outing were Robby Harbison '17 and Jon Dennett '15.
Wesleyan used its offensive firepower for a six-run 4th inning in game two, as Wesleyan stormed back from an early 10-3 deficit to take an 11-10 lead. When Macalester tied the game in the top of the 5th, Wesleyan responded with two runs to break the deadlock and go on for the 13-11 victory. Wesleyan got eight of its 11 hits from the first five batters in the lineup as they also accounted for nine of the squad's 10 RBI. Sam Goodwin-Boyd '15 (#9, left side photo) and Guy Davidson '16 both drove in three runs while Goodwin-Boyd, Donnie Cimino '15 and Andrew Yin '15 all had two safeties. Nick Miceli '17, the third Cardinals hurler in the game, tossed four innings of relief, scattering five hits while giving up only one run for his first career victory. Jimmy Hill '15 threw the final inning to get a save.
Wesleyan closed out the trip Fri., March 21 against Gustvus Adolphus. Not much went right for the Cardinals during the 24-0 loss though the team did collect 10 hits led by Dennett and Schaefer, each with two. Pitching the final two innings, Sam Elias '15 recorded each of the final six outs by strikeout but Gustavus Adolphus added seven uneared runs in the 9th to pad an already insurrmountable 17-0 lead.
Harbison logged a .462 batting average during the excursion to lead the team while Cimino hit a lofty .420. Yin hit .404 and led the squad with 20 runs. Tops in the RBI department was Goodwin-Boyd with 17 whie Schaefer had 15. Cooney collected 20 strikeouts in 18 innings of work with a 3.50 ERA and a solid .203 opposing team batting average.
Wesleyan hopes in begin the northern schedule Sat., March 29 with a double-header at Mitchell.
