Baseball Jumps out to Early 8-1 Lead and Hangs on for 12-9 Opening-Day Win over Simpson in Arizona

Ellis Schaefer '17 (#2, photo) debuted in the DH spot and went 2-for-3 with three RBI to spark Wesleyan to a 12-9 opening-day victory over Simpson in Tucson, Ariz. Sun., March 9.  The squad has a pair of contests Mon., March 10, beginnig with Wheaton (IL) and finishing with Bethany Lutheran.

Over the first two innings, the Cardinals combined five hits with four Simpson errors to push across eight runs, four in each inning.  Schaefer had an RBI single in the 1st and a sacrifice fly in the 2nd. A two-run triple by Sam Goodwin-Boyd '15 in the 2nd was another key hit.

After Simpson closed to within two runs, 9-7, after three innings, the scoring settled down.  Schaefer added another sacrifice fly in the 4th while Eric Jones '16 and Jon Dennett '15 supplied RBI singles in the 7th for the final Cardinal runs.  Chris Law '14 got the win in relief, going 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run.  Peter Rantz '16 got the final five outs for the save without allowing a hit.

Wesleyan collected 10 hits in the game as Schaefer and Dennett both had a pair of safeties.  Dennett knocked in two runs as he, Goodwin-Boyd and Schaefer accounted for seven of the team's 10 RBI.
