Maddy Coulter '14 Nets Third Career Hat Trick but Hamilton Gets Final Goal to Post 8-7 Women's Lax Win
Hamilton broke a 7-7 tie with 5:50 left and then hung on to post an 8-7 victory over Wesleyan Sat., March 1 in the opening game of the season for both squads.
The Continentals hit the net behind Wesleyan goalie Nina Labovich '16 from close range about chest high and proved to be the winner despite several possessions by Wesleyan in the final moments. Wesleyan had the ball for a final attempt with less than 30 second remaining after a Continental turnover and the Cardinals got the ball to the front of the Hamilton net but a final shot by Meredith Smith '17 was blocked and the teams battled for the loose ball as the final horn sounded.
Down 7-4 with 16:38 left, Wesleyan rallied for three straight goals to tie the game, 7-7, with 12:06 on the clock. A goal by Abby D'Angelo '14 off a pass from Isabelle King '16, the third goal of the game by Maddy Coulter '14 (#3, photo), and a free-position conversion with a low bouncer to the left by Martha Harding '16, evened the count. The hat trick was the third for Coulter over her four-season career.
Labovich had a strong game for Wesleyan, making eight saves, four of them on free-position shots. Wesleyan had a 22-18 edge in total shots.
Neither team led by more than one goal as the score see-sawed back and forth until the Continentals converted a free-position attempt with 19:27 remaining, giving Hamilton a 6-4 lead. It was the only free-position goal of the day for Hamilton in five tries. The score was even at intermission, 3-3, and stood 4-4 before Hamilton grabbed a 5-4 lead at 20:02.
This was the fourth meeting all-time between the teams and Hamilton had won them all.
Wesleyan returns to action Wed., March 5, hosting Eastern Connecticut in non-league action.
