Cardinals Host NCAA Northeast Regional Tournament as Three Cardinals Finish in Top-8

Hosting an NCAA qualifying tournament for the third time in the last nine years, Wesleyan was the site of the Northeast Regional Championships from which the top three finishers in each of the 10 weight classes goes on to compete in the NCAA Division III Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, March 14-15.  There were 18 colleges in attendance during the tournament Sat.-Sun., March 1-2.

Wesleyan had nine entrants in the regional, a very young group consisting of four freshmen, four sophomores and a junior.  Eight of the nine Cardinals captured at least one match.  Among the Cardinal grapplers, 165-pounder Taran Carr '16 (photo insert upper left), 141-pounder Matt Pelton '17 and 157-pounder Ed Pierce '17 all went 2-2 and reached the consolation semifinals.  One more victory for each would have earned them all-regional honors. Pelton finished a strong campaign with a 22-18 mark while Pierce bumped up a weight class all season and finished his rookie year at 15-14. Carr closed out his season at 21-16. This was Carr's second time finishing just short of the Northeast Regional podium. In addition, Carr was one of four Wesleyan wrestlers to record a pin during the proceedings, joined by Chris Siracusa '16 at 149 pounds, Ryan Sblendorio '15 at 174 pounds, Simon Levin '16 at 184 pounds and Josh Roometua '16 at 197 pounds.  Sblendorio posted the strongest record among the Cardinals in 2013-14 with a solid 26-12 mark.

Wesleyan's wrestling action concluded for the season with its 14th place performance at the regional.
