Nick Cooney '15 Pitches Baseball Past Middlebury, 7-1, in NESCAC West Season Opener

Nick Cooney '15 (#21, left side photo) scattered six Middlebury hits over 7.1 innings of action, allowing one run with five strikeouts, to propel homestanding Wesleyan to a 7-1 NESCAC West victory over Middlebury Fri., April 4.  The teams will completed their three-game series with a double-header in Middletown Sat., April 5.

Wesleyan gathered 12 hits in the contest as four players – Guy Davidson '16 (#6, right side photo) and Eric Jones '16 along with Donnie Cimino '15 and Andrew Yin '15 — all had two safeties.  

Wesleyan, with eight wins over Middlebury in the last 10 meetings, took the lead for good in the 4th inning when Robby Harbison '17 hit a squibber to shortstop with the bases loaded to drive in a run on the groundout.  Nick Miceli '17 drove in the second run of the inning with a single as the Cardinals broke a 1-1 tie at the start of the frame.  The Cardinals added three more in the 5th with Davidson knocking in the first run with a single before Jon Dennett '15 hit a sacrifice fly for the second run.  A Middlebury error in the outfield accounted for the third run.  Wesleyan's final run came in the 8th on a Cimino RBI liner to center field.

Middlebury had taken the lead in the 2nd inning on an RBI groundout with runners at second and third.   Wesleyan evened the count in the 3rd on a throwing error with two outs and a runner at third base.

Sam Elias '15 picked up the final five outs on the mound for the Cardinals, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.
