The Cardinals put themselves in contention for the sixth and final NESCAC tournament spot by closing out the regular season Sun., April 27 with a 6-3 conference victory over Bates, giving the squad a 9-6 overall record and a 4-5 NESCAC slate. With four teams posting four wins in the league behind front-runners Middlebury, Amherst and Williams, which accounted for three of the Cardinals' five setback, Wesleyan was the odd man out due to losses to Trinity and Tufts, which got into the playoffs, along with Bowdoin, the only NESCAC team Wesleyan did not play during 2013-14. Only six of the 11 league teams qualify for the post-season.
Wesleyan got overwhelming singles wins vs. Bates from team co-captains Stephen Monk '15 at #3, 6-0, 6-1, and Sam Rudovsky '16 at #4, 6-1, 6-1. Michael Liu '17 (right side photo) upped his single mark to a team-best 11-4 this season with a straight-set win at #2. Jake Roberts '17 forged a winning record at #1 (8-7) with his straight-set win while Zacho Brint '16 wrapped up an 8-4 record from his #6 singles spot with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph. Though Michael King '16 (left side photo) fell in his match at #5, he ranked second on the squad with his 10-5 singles record for the season.
Wesleyan's only doubles win vs. bates came from the #3 pair of Cameron Hicks '17 and Greg Lyon '17 as they came through with an 8-4 conquering. Robert and Rudovsky dropped their #1 doubles match but were tops for the year with an overall record of 9-4 as a tandem.
With no seniors on the team, the Cardinals will return intact for the 2014-15 season, bolstered by a crop of newcomers. Three freshmen saw consistent action for the Cardinals this past season with #1 and #2 singles occupied by first-years, along with a another frosh who played eight matches at #1 doubles and 13 in total along with a 1-1 singles mark.
