Cardinals Defeat #3-Ranked Bates, Fall to Top-Ranked Wellesley in Pair of Dual Races on Malden River
The #6 nationally ranked women's crew travelled to Medford, Mass. to face #3 Bates, #1 Wellesley and #11 Tufts in a "double dual" format of racing. Wesleyan drew third-ranked Bates in the first round. In the varsity 8 race, Wesleyan upset Bates to win by just over three seconds in a time of 7:00.9. The varsity line up, changed from the previous week of racing, included coxswain Brianne Weimann '15, Annie Dade '16, Remy Johnson '16, Kayla Cloud '14, Emma Koramshahi '16, Avery Mushinski '15, Clare Doyle '14, Emily Johnson '13, and Hannah Korevaar '14. In the second round, Wesleyan (6:52) lost to Wellesley (7:04).
The second varsity 8 fell to Bates in a close race. The Cardinals clocked a time of 7:05.5 to the Bobcats 6:58.6. The crew was able to turn things around in the second round as they beat Tufts by 23 seconds. The crew was made up of coxswain Ari Rudess '15, Emilie Sinkler '14, Hannah Brigham '17, Lucy Finn '14, Emma Buford '16, Emma Halter '17, Eva Frieden '15, Ellen Paik '16 and Kelly Garrity '17.
The third varsity 8 lost to Bates in the first round with a time of 7:41.3. Bates came through in 7:33.2. In the second round Wesleyan was able to best Tufts by just over six seconds. The crew included coxswain Kate Davis '6, Anna Melio '16, Emma Golub '16, Abby Gruppuso '16, Sarah Newman '16, Emily Garvin '15, Hannah Ossoff '16, Becca Michaelson '15, Gillian Mahoney '15 (first race with Bates) and Nairi Touryan '16 (second race with Tufts).
The novice 8, made up of coxswain Erin Deleon '17, Kate Suslovic '17, Jill Moraski '16, Iryelis Lopez '17, Annalee Holmdahl '17, Avery Kimmell '17, Molly Muoio '17, Sarah Lazurus '17 and Ellie Case-Pethica '17 came away with two wins, defeating Wellesley and Tufts. The Cardinals were able to move past Wellesley in a time of 7:28.3 to Wellesley's 7:40.2. Then Wesleyan cruised past Tufts in 7:39. Tufts finished in 8:32.
The squad was to head to Pittsfield, Mass. to compete with Williams Sat., April 19 in its next affair, but high winds and rough water caused a postponement of the event. The next race is against Trinity Sat., April 26 and Williams has been added to the docket with the racing in Pittsfield, Mass.
