Cardinals Among Final 3 Teams in NCAA Regional Baseball Tournament after 6-1 Win over Misericordia

Seventh-seeded Wesleyan advanced to the losers bracket final with a 6-1 victory over host and fifth-seeded Misericordia Sat., May 17 in an elimination game of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional.  Wesleyan will play Susquehanna University Sun., May 18 at noon for the right to battle Baldwin-Wallace for the regional championship.  Logging their 30th win of the season, the Cardinals have tied the program record set by the 1994 NCAA runner-up squad that went 30-8.  The game vs. Susquehanna will have LiveStats and a webcast.

The Cardinals' starter Gavin Pittore '16 (#13, main photo) improved to 7-1 on the hill.  The hard throwing righty allowed no runs and scattered five hits while fanning 10 in seven innings of work.  Sam Elias '15 (#25, photo insert upper right) picked up his third save of the season throwing 1.1 innings of scoreless ball to close out the contest.

Wesleyan was led offensively by Ellis Schaefer '17 (#2, photo insert middle right) who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a RBI.  Andrew Yin '15 (#8, photo insert lower right) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Jon Dennett '15 added a hit in two official at-bats and drove in two runs.

Wesleyan opened the scoring in the bottom half of the 1st inning, plating two early runs.  Robby Harbison '17 led off the game by ripping the first pitch he saw into the right field corner for a double.  After a walk and an error by the shortstop, the bases were loaded for Sam Goodwin-Boyd '15 who drove in the game’s first run with a sac fly to left field.

Misericordia went to the bullpen after only four batters, but Dennett added a sacrifice fly to right to score the second run of the inning before the side was retired.

Misericordia had its biggest threat in the top of the 5th when it loaded the bases with no outs but Pittore struck out the next three batters in order to leave the bases full.

The Cardinals broke the game open in the 6th using four hits and two Cougar errors to score four runs and increase the lead to 6-0.  Wesleyan loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and an error by the shortstop.  Dennett walked to force in the first run of the inning.  After an infield fly for the first out, Schaefer smacked in infield single for an RBI before Ben Hoynes '15 hit a chopper to short. The Cougars got the force out at second but the throw to first for the double play was wide allowing two runs to score to stretch the lead to 6-0.

Misericordia got on the board with a single tally in the 8th inning after Pittore had been relieved.  An error with two outs at short extended the inning as Misericordia added a pair of hits to bring in a run.  A hit batter loaded the bases, bringing a Wesleyan pitching change to Elias, who picked up a strikeouts to finish the inning.  Elias added two more strikeouts in the 9th, retiring the side in order.
