Amanda Belichick, a 2007 graduate of Wesleyan University who served as interim head coach of women's lacrosse at Wesleyan during the 2014 season, has been named faculty head coach of women's lacrosse, Athletics Director Mike Whalen announced.
"I am pleased to announce that after conducting a national search, we have hired Amanda Belichick as our head women's lacrosse coach," Whalen stated. "Amanda did a great job this past season in her role of interim head coach and we believe she has all the skills necessary to build a winning program at Wesleyan. As a graduate of Wesleyan and a former captain of our women's lacrosse team, Amanda knows what it takes to be a successful student-athlete in a highly competitive academic environment. There is no question that there is a bright future for the women's lacrosse team at Wesleyan."
"I am thrilled to be returning to Wesleyan as the head coach," Belichick said. "After a great year in 2014, I’m looking forward to continuing to lead the Wesleyan lacrosse team. It is an honor to be coaching at my alma mater, as I am passionate about the lacrosse program, athletic department and the University."
Wesleyan fashioned a 5-10 record in 2014 in the ultra-competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), which had seven member institutions ranked among the top-16 nationally in the final Division III poll and five NCAA tournament qualifiers. All five went on to reach the Sweet 16, with three in the Elite 8, two semifinalists and one finalist (national runner-up Trinity).
Belichick, who played four years at Wesleyan on attack from 2004-07, compiled 47 goals and 25 assists for 72 career points. Following graduation, Belichick began her coaching career at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Conn., before serving as an assistant women's lacrosse coach at UMass Amherst for the 2010 season. She then moved to The Ohio State University, where she was an assistant women's lacrosse coach for three years. Belichick is the daughter of long-time New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, a 1975 Wesleyan graduate.
