Marcia Whitehead '08 New Hits Leader but Cards Rally Ended in 7th by Trinity in 8-5 NESCAC Loss

With four hits, including a pair of doubles, in four at-bats in a season-ending 8-5 NESCAC tournament loss to Trinity Sat., May 5 at Tufts, Marcia Whitehead 08 (#6, main photo) eclipsed the Wesleyan all-time hits record with 122. The previous mark of 119 was held by Debra-Ellen Glickstein '01. Whitehead still has another year to add to her career mark. Despite Whitehead's brilliant day, a two-run double by Jo Brownson '08 to get the Cards on the board in the 6th and Molly O'Connell's '09 second hit of the contest, a double in the 7th to bring in the team's fifth run, Wesleyan could not overcome a six-run deficit entering its half of the final frame. Whitehead ended the year with a team-leading .398 average. Pitching her final game for the Cards was Molly Gaebe '07 (#9, photo insert upper right), who holds the all-time strikeout record with 397 and is the career ERA leader (2.14). Gaebe also closed out her career with 113 hits to rank third on the all-time list while her 23 doubles and 64 RBI both represent team career marks. She batted .342 over her four seasons. It was a banner season for the team as the Cardinals set team record for wins in a season (21) and longest winning streak (12) while qualifying for the NESCAC tournament for the first time. It also marked the first time in team history that Wesleyan defeated all four NESCAC West rivals (Williams, Amherst, Middlebury and Hamilton) at least once in the same campaign.
