Molly O'Connell '09 (main photo) pounded a home run in each of the Cardinals' contests during the Sun West Tournament in Orange County, Calif Wed., March 19, as Wesleyan defeated St. Catherine (MN), 10-6, and Puget Sound (WA), 4-3. O'Connell capped a six-run outburst in the first inning vs. St. Catherine with a two-run shot as Karla Hargrave '08, Talia Bernstein '11 (photo insert lower left) and Marcia Whitehead '08 each connected for an RBI double in the frame as well. Anu Rimal '11 (photo insert upper right) came in to throw the final three frames, allowing just two hits and no runs in earning her first career save. She wasted no time picking up her second save as she entered the game vs. Puget Sound with two on and no outs in the 7th inning as Wesleyan held a 4-1 edge. She got out of the jam without giving up the lead, recording the final out with runners at second and third. Hargrave got the win as she yielded just four hits in 6-plus inning of work. In the top of the 7th inning, Bernstein launched her second homer of the year, a two-run blow that proved to be the game-winning hit. O'Connell had spotted the Cards a 2-0 lead with a solo shot over the fence in the 2nd inning after Bernstein's bases-loaded groundout gave Wesleyan the lead for good in the 1st frame. Through 12 games, both Bernstein and Whitehead have hit safely in 11 contests with Whitehead opening the season on a nine-game hitting streak. Bernstein currently has a 10-game streak alive. The squad wraps up its West Coast swing Thurs., March 20, taking on Tufts and St. Mary's (MN) in the Sun West Tournament. (all photos courtesy of Ron Bernstein P'11)
