Meaghan Dendy '10 Hurls Two Wins, Marcia Whitehead '08 Hot at Plate as Cards Take 2 of 3 from Ephs

Connecting for three of the Cardinals' 14 hits during a 12-4, six-inning victory at Williams Sat., April 5, Marcia Whitehead '08 (photo insert lower left courtesy of Ron Bernstein P'11) picked up three RBI as well as seven of the team's starters had at least one safety in the contest. On the mound, Meaghan Dendy '10 (main photo by Ron Bernstein P'11) went the distance to pick up her fifth win of the season. Wesleyan never trailed in the contest, picking up three runs in the top of the 1st and adding three more in both the 2nd and 3rd to make it a 9-3 game. Two runs in the top of the 6th, on a sacrifice fly by Joanna Brownson '08 and an RBI single by Molly O'Connell '09, who also had a solo homer in the 5th, put the margin up to eight runs. Dendy retired the Ephs in order in the bottom of the 6th to wrap it up. The teams did battle in a double-header Sun., April 6 to close out the three-game NESCAC West series. The teams split with the Ephs grabbing a 5-1 decision in the opener and the Cards coming back for a 2-1 win in the nightcap. Dendy tossed a six-hitter and scored the tying run in the 6th on a Williams error after cracking a double. Another Ephs miscue allowed Whitehead to cross the plate with what proved to be the winner. Talia Bernstein '11 knocked in the only Cardinal run in game one with a 7th-inning single. With a .583 batting average for the week (7-for-12) and a 1.62 ERA, Dendy was chosen as NESCAC Player of the Week. The two wins over Williams doubled the team all-time victory total against the Ephs as Wesleyan was 2-44 against its Little Three rival coming into the 2008 campaign. Wesleyan, now in the driver's seat in the NESCAC West with a 5-1 league mark, has another big conference weekend ahead at Middlebury starting with a single game Fri., April 11.
