AMANDA SHAPIRO RETURNS FROM NCAAs AS TWO-EVENT ALL-AMERICAN IN BREASTSTROKE

Amanda Shapiro '08 placed fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a team-record time of 2:21.99 in the preliminaries and finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming & Diving Championships held at the U. of Minnesota March 9-11 to become an All-American in both events. Her best time in the 100 breast at Nationals was 1:05.30, slightly over her team mark and qualifying time of 1:04.79. It is her first trip to Nationals. She is the first Wesleyan woman swimmer to become an All-American since Emily Raucher '99 was a two-event All-American in 1997, placing fifth in the 1650 free and sixth in the 500 free. Shapiro had earned all-NESCAC honors in all three breaststroke events while setting team records at the time in all three during the NESCAC Championships at Bowdoin Feb. 17-19. She was second in the 50 breast (:29.98), third in the 100 breast (1:04.79) and second in the 200 breast (2:24.76). She also combined with Kate Krems '08, Caitlin Bethlahmy '09 and Agnes Koczo '09 for a team-record 3:58.77 in the 400 medley relay while finishing third for all-NESCAC laurels.
