BEN BYERS EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS AT NCAA SWIM MEET
(Places Fifth in 1650 Freestyle at NCAA Division III Championships)
Ben
Byers, a sophomore at Wesleyan University and resident of Seattle, Wash.,
placed fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III men's
swimming & diving championships in Holland, Mich. on Saturday, March 19. His
time of 15:51.49 broke his own Wesleyan team record by .2 seconds and earned
him All-America honors as the top eight finishers in each event are
All-Americans while places nine through 16 receive honorable-mention
recognition.
During the dual-meet season, Byers went undefeated in
all distance freestyle events of 500 yards or more (20-0) as Wesleyan posted a
6-4 team record. He went on to win NESCAC titles in both the 1000 yard
freestyle and the 1650 yard freestyle, becoming the first Wesleyan swimmer to
take a crown in the five-year history of NESCAC Championships. Both of his
times at NESCACs were team records (9:29.22 in the 1000 and 15:51.69 in the
1650) though he broke his 1650 time at the NCAAs.
Byers was an honorable-mention All-American in the 1650
free last year as he placed 11th in the event.
