JANINE ZALTSMAN SELECTED FOR USA
SQUAD FOR WORLD MACCABI GAMES IN JULY (Top Cardinal Freestyler to Compete in Israel July 13-23, 2009)
Janine Zaltsman '11, Wesleyan's top performer
in the 100-yard freestyle during the 2008-09 season with an NCAA Division III
Championships "B" cut time of :53.08 and the seventh-place finisher in the
annual NESCAC meet in the event, has been chosen as one of 12 women swimmers to
represent the United States during the 18th Maccabi World Games to be held in
Israel July 13-23, 2009.
The Maccabi Games are held every four years and are
considered the Jewish Olympics as approximately 60 nations from across the globe
will be sending their top Jewish athletes to compete in 28 different sports.
Zaltsman applied to represent the United States and was selected based upon her
outstanding performances. She has been chosen to complete in both the 50-
and 100-yard freestyle, but also could take part in relays and other events.
Zaltsman had the top times at Wesleyan in both the 50- and 100-yard butterfly
events during the 2008-09 season in addition to her freestyle accomplishments,
and placed eighth in the NESCAC meet in the 50 fly.
Other individuals on the U.S. women's swimming squad
for the Maccabi Games include Danielle Arad, a Division III All-American in the
butterfly from Kenyon College ; Julie Finegold, an all-Big Ten performer from
the U. of Iowa ; Christina Hughes, a top freestyler and buttterflyer from
Columbia University ; and Naomi Javanifard, part of an honorable-mention
Division I All-America medley relay squad from the U. of California at Santa
Barbara.
At Wesleyan, Zaltsman is part of both the 200- and
400-yard medley relay teams which hold school records. She was a College
Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Academic All-American in 2008.
