JEFF MAIER '06 ENDS BASEBALL CAREER WITH 189 HITS AS ALL-TIME LEADER
(Breaks Previous Team Mark of 168 During Game with Bates April 12, Ends with .375 Career Average)

Entering the 2006 baseball season with 139 hits, Jeff Maier '06 added 50 safeties to his career total during his final campaign to assume Wesleyan team leadership with 189.  He broke the mark of Bill Robinson '03, who collected 168 hits during his four years.  Maier entered the game with the Bates Bobcats in Middletown Wednesday, April 12 tied with Robinson but belted a pair of doubles, the first coming during the third inning, to move into first-place.  Maier led the Cardinals with his .403 average in 2006 while also ranking second on the team in RBI with 22 and third in runs scored with 18.  He opened the season with a 10-game hitting streak and closed it out with a nine-game streak as he hit safely in 28 of the 32 games in which he played this season.
Maier was named a CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine District I Academic All-American in 2006 after a voting of the regional sports information directors.  A first-team all-NESCAC pick in 2004 when he hit a career-high .409 with 52 hits, 28 runs and 16 RBI, Maier ended his four seasons with a .375 career average.
