HANNAH JACKSON, BETH OGATA AND CHARLIE
WEISS NAMED
MAYNARD AWARD WINNERS AT WESLEYAN
(Top-Scoring Women's Ice Hockey Player and Two Outstanding Rowing
Talents Receive University's Scholar-Athlete Award for 2008-09)
Hannah

University's Roger Maynard '37 Memorial Award
for the 2008-09 academic year. The award is presented annually to the
outstanding male and female scholar-athletes in their last year of
eligibility. Jackson, Ogata and Weiss represent the finest combination
of athletic accomplishment and academic achievement at Wesleyan. The three
are joined in the photo by (L to R) head women's crew coach Brian Dawe,

(Charlie's mother), Joel Weiss (Charlie's father), assistant men's crew
coach Norm Graf, and assistant women's ice hockey coach Stephanie Boulay.
A women's ice hockey team co-captain in 2008-09, Hannah has
been a mainstay on the squad for four years. Playing in 90 of a possible 91
games during her career, Hannah racked up 57 career points from her forward
spot, netting 24 goals along with 33 assists. She led the team in scoring
each of her four seasons with a career-high 17 points during her junior
year. Hannah is majoring in neuroscience and behavior and carries a GPA of
4.03.
A women's crew tri-captain in 2008-09, Beth has
been a member of the varsity crew for four seasons. She was part of the
varsity eight in 2005-06 and 2006-07, handling the stroke position as a
sophomore. She then occupied a seat in the varsity four much of 2007-08 as
its stroke. Back in the varsity eight for 2008-09, Beth has helped the
Cardinals go 4-1 thus far and earn a national ranking of sixth among
Division III colleges. Majoring in earth and environmental science, Beth has
a GPA of 4.11.
The sole team captain for men's crew in 2008-09,
Charlie has been a staple figure in the varsity eight for two seasons.
He began his Wesleyan rowing career during the 2004-05 campaign as a member
of the second varsity eight. He missed the 2005-06 campaign while serving as
a volunteer teacher in Texas, initially for the fall but staying on due to
the influx of additional students who were relocated by Hurricane Katrina.
He has been part of three New England medal-winning crews at Wesleyan. He
was a member of Wesleyan's second varsity eight for a bronze medal in 2005
and a silver medal in 2007 before helping the Cardinals' varsity eight to a
7-2 dual-race record and a bronze medal at the 2008 New England Rowing
Championships. Wesleyan is currently 2-0 this spring and ranked third in New
England. With a 3.80 GPA, Charlie majors in English.
Jackson, Ogata and Weiss were honored at a luncheon Friday, April
3, in support of National
Student-Athlete Day, an annual NCAA event.
