(Friday, May 9, 2003)The winners of team awards in Wesleyan University's
29 varsity sports as well as several additional major
awards that are given for overall achievement were
announced at the University's All-Sports Banquet, held
Thursday, May 8, at Wesleyan's Freeman Athletic Center. A
complete list of award winners follows.
In women's athletics, each of the college's 14 varsity teams presents the Jones Award to its outstanding contributor. Those winners were:
Basketball - Shaleen Bowman '03 (Guilford, Conn.) and Kamica Lewis (Jamaica Hills, N.Y.) ;
Crew - Liz McColloch '03 ( Portsmouth, R.I.) ;
Cross Country - Katy Trandem '03 (Faribault, Minn.) ;
Field Hockey - Marley Aloe '03 (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Sonya Behnke '03 (Marblehead, Mass.) ;
Ice Hockey - Kiersten Von Trapp '03 (Stowe, Vt.) ;
Indoor Track - Jenna Flateman '04 (Barre, Vt.) ;
Lacrosse - Marley Aloe '03 (Pittsburgh, Pa.) ;
Soccer - Jenny Hipscher '04 (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ;
Softball - Lindsay Wasserman '03 (Branford, Conn.) ;
Squash - Erin Larkin '03 (Scarsdale, N.Y.) ;
Swimming & Diving - Sarah Weigle '05 (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) ;
Tennis - Sarah Seidman '03 (Brookline, Mass.) ;
Track & Field - Caitlin Snow '03 (Spruce Head, Me.) ;
Volleyball - Eliza Allen '03 (Durango, Colo.)
In addition, women's crew presents the Coxswains Award
to the upperclass member of the team who exhibits a high
level of technical skill, consistency and supports the
cohesiveness of the team. The recipient was Nicole
Seminara '04 (Manheim, ,Pa.). Softball presents the
Meredith Frummer Memorial Award to the player with the
highest batting average for the season. The recipient was
Diana Garcia '06 (Canoga Park, Calif.).

Baseball - MacNaughten Memorial Award (for outstanding achievement in the sport) - Bill Robinson '03 (Berlin, Conn.) ;
Basketball - The Morningstar Award (to the player who best exemplifies sportsmanship, leadership, determination and unselfishness) -
Chad Gordon '03 (Los Angeles, Calif.) ;
Crew - The Founder's Oar (to the outstanding oarsman) - Ryan Waples '03 (Seattle, Wash.) ;
Crew - The Captain's Oar (to the rower who best demonstrates dedication and sportsmanship) - Ryan Waples (Seattle, Wash.) ;
Cross Country - J. Elmer Swanson Award (to the runner who distinguishes himself through his commitment
to the team's success and his own improvement) - Dan Lazarek '03 (Pawcatuck, Conn.) ;
Football - Bacon Award (to the player whose efforts during the season contributed the most to the
team's success) - Brennan Carney '04 (South Burlington, Vt.) ;
Football - Eck Memorial Award (to the player who exemplifies the best in team spirit, sportsmanship
and devotion to the game of football) - Greg Thomas '03 (Bedford, N.H.) ;
Football - Luke Yohan Memorial Award (to the senior player who raises his level of play in Little Three
games while demonstrating the strength of character, passion for the game and above all, devotion to his teammates
exhibitied by Luke Yohan '97) - Brendan Kelly '03 (West Roxbury, Mass.) ;
Golf - Wood Memorial Award (to the outstanding golfer) - Adam Diamond '04 (Longmeadow, Mass.) ;
Ice Hockey - William Spurrier Award (to the team's most valuable player) - Jon Blanchard '03 (Yarmouth, Me.) ;
Ice Hockey - Scanlon LaCross Memorial Award (to the player whose character and effort were exemplary) -
Justin Conroy '03 (Londonderry, N.H.) ;
Indoor Track - Coaches Award (to the member of the team who through outstanding leadership, loyalty,
dedication, excellent performance, unselfish behavior and enjoyment of the sport, contributes the most
to the success of the team) - Tony Saudek '03 Lutherville Timonium, Md.) ;
Lacrosse - "MVP" Award (to the team's most valuable player) - Ian Applegate '04 (East Setauket, N.Y.) ;
Lacrosse - William T. Call III Memorial Award (to the player who exemplifies the best in team spirit, sportsmanship,
unselfishness and devotion to the game of lacrosse) - Ben Vaughn '03 (Bethesda, Md.) ;
Soccer - Raymond Walsh Memorial Award (to the player who has shown outstanding ability and leadership) -
Padraig Hughes '03 (Amherst, N.Y.) ;
Soccer - Bernie O'Rourke Memorial Award (to the player whose devotion to the game of soccer and his
teammates is exemplary) - David Stone '04 (Passadena, Calif.) ;
Squash - Henri Salaun Intercollegiate Squash Award (to the player who distinguishes himself through his
commitment to the team's success and his own improvement) - Kevin McCarthy '04 (Stonington, Conn.) ;
Swimming & Diving - McCurdy Award (to the member of the team who best exemplifies leadership and
sportsmanship) - Geoff Hill '03 (Averill Park, N.Y.) ;
Tennis - Wood Memorial Award (to the player who demonstrates leadership, discipline, competitive spirit
and sportsmanship) - Darren Becker '03 (Manchester, Mass.) ;
Tennis - Fred B. Millett Memorial Award (to the doubles player who best combines the qualities of skill, spirit and
sportsmanship exemplified by Fred B. Millett '65) - Alex Wong '03 (Newton, Mass.) ;
Track & Field - Martin Award (to the member of the team best exemplifying sportsmanship,
friendship and leadership) - Oz Hazel '03 (Birmingham, Mich.) ;
Wrestling - Most Valuable Wrestler Award (to the wrestler who contributes the most to the team's success
through his outstanding leadership, loyalty, dedication, excellent performance, unselfish behavior, steadfast
determination and enjoyment of the sport) - Matt Ferrisi '03 (Northfield, N.H.).
Three other major awards were presented. The Maynard
Memorial Award is presented to the male and female
scholar-athlete who best exemplifies the spirit,
accomplishment and humility of Roger Maynard '37. The
recipients were Greg Thomas '03 (Bedford, N.H.) (male
recipient) and Caitlin Snow '03 (Spruce head, Me.)
(female recipient). The Ahrens Memorial Award is
presented to the male athlete who has best combined the
qualities of Carl R. Ahrens '60. The recipient was Bill
Robinson '03 (Berlin, Conn.). The Hoagland Award is
presented to the person who makes an outstanding
contribution to women's athletics. The co-recipients were
Eliza Allen '03 (Durango, Colo.) and Shaleen Bowman '03
(Guilford, Conn.).
