CHRIS POTTER NAMED FACULTY HEAD MEN'S ICE HOCKEY AND GOLF
COACH AT WESLEYAN
Chris
Potter, who served as interim men's ice hockey and golf coach since being
hired at Wesleyan in mid-October, has been named an adjunct faculty member and
head men's ice hockey and golf coach at the college, athletics director John
Biddiscombe announced.
Potter directed the 2003-04 Wesleyan men's ice hockey
team to an overall record of 9-10-4 and a league record of 7-8-3, good enough
for seventh place in the 10-team New England Small College Athletic Conference
(NESCAC) standings. As a member of the ECAC, Wesleyan played an 18-game
league schedule that included single games against each of the NESCAC colleges
as well one game each vs. teams in the ECAC Division III East.
Serving as an assistant ice hockey coach and recruiting
coordinator at Brown University from1998 -2003 before coming to Wesleyan,
Potter stepped into a vacancy left by Buddy Powers, who was hired at Wesleyan
in May, 2003 to replace long-time head coach Dave Snyder upon his retirement.
Powers then announced his decision to leave Wesleyan for personal reasons
during the fall.
Potter, a 1993 graduate of the University of
Connecticut where he was a four-year ice hockey letterman, an All-American as
a senior and a two-time all-ECAC and all-New England selection, began his
coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater from 1996-1998. For three
years following his graduation, Potter was a member of the Roanoke Express in
the Southern Division of the East Coast Hockey League. Then an affiliate of
the San Jose Sharks, Roanoke is currently affiliated with the Chicago Black
Hawks of the NHL.
From 1997 through 2003, Potter had been involved with
USA Hockey-Team New England as an instructor, assistant coach and in 2001 and
2002, as a head coach.
Potter earned his Master's degree in education from
UConn in 2003.
"Chris came to Wesleyan with a reputation as one of the
top Ivy League assistants," said Biddiscombe. "In only one season at
Wesleyan he has established himself as an outstanding head coach."
