Five Wesleyan spring sports teams will be involved in post-season competition this week as women's tennis competes in the NCAA Division III tournament, men's lacrosse and baseball take part in the ECAC New England Division III tournament and men's and women's crew move on to the small college national championships sponsored by Avia Communications. In crew, both the men and women have qualified two boats for the Avaya Communications Collegiate Championships in Gainesville, Ga., Sunday, May 13. The women's varsity eight and second varsity eight, which both placed third in the New England Championships this past Saturday, and the men's varsity heavyweight 8, which finished seventh, and the second varsity heavyweight eight, which placed third, will compete in the national championships. Last year, the women's varsity eight placed second and earned a spot in the NCAA Rowing Championships. The team is hopeful of repeating the performance. Women's tennis, following an 8-0 spring and a 14-3 record for the year, is seeded fifth of seven teams in the East Regional of the NCAA Division III tournament. The team will face fourth-seeded Skidmore Saturday at noon at Amherst in its first match. The winner draws top-seeded Amherst in the bracket with the winner advancing to the national team tournament quarterfinals at Trinity University in Texas. Williams College hosts the other half of the East Regional with Tufts, Vassar and Trinity (Conn.) as participants. Wesleyan played five of the other six regional participants, losing to Amherst, Williams and Tufts (the team's only three losses) while defeating Vassar and Trinity. Wesleyan, making its first NCAA appearance, did not play Skidmore, a perennial NCAA tournament participant and 1998 national champion. In lacrosse, Wesleyan is seeded second of eight teams in the ECAC New England Division III tournament and plays a first-round game at home Wednesday at 3 pm against UMass Boston (12-4). Wesleyan has a 15-2 record, having had its 12-game win streak snapped this past Saturday by Bowdoin, 12-9, in the NESCAC tournament semi-finals. Wesleyan is hoping for a chance to avenge that loss as Bowdoin is the top seed in the ECAC tournament. Should Wesleyan defeat UMass Boston, the Cardinals will host the winner of the Conn. College-Gordon first-round game on Friday. The championship game will be played Sunday at the site of the higher-seeded finalist. Wesleyan has played UMass Boston only once in history, that in the ECAC tournament of 1974, winning 8-7. UMass Boston was the Little East runner-up this year behind NCAA qualifier Eastern Connecticut, the only other team to defeat Wesleyan this season. In baseball, Wesleyan is the third seed of eight in the ECAC New England Division III tournament. In the opening round, the Cardinals face Worcester St. (27-11), seeded sixth, at noon Friday in a game to be played at Tufts University. The Wesleyan-Worcester St. winner plays the winner of the Springfield-Albertus Magnus contest in a semi-final at noon Saturday, again at Tufts. The championship game will be played at approximately 3:30 pm Saturday on the campus of Babson College, one of four partiicipants in the other half of the bracket with Suffolk, Endicott and Mass. College filling out the field. Wesleyan has an 18-12-1 record this year, clinching its 16th winning campaign in the last 17 seasons. -30- |
