WESLEYAN SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS HONORED BY C.S.C.A.A. AS ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN TEAMS (Women's Team Rated no. 1, Men no. 4 Nationally for Semester GPA)Wesleyan University's women's and men's swimming and diving teams were rated no. 1 and no. 4 (tied), respectively, among all colleges in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for Spring, 2001 semester GPA, it was announced by the CSCAA.
Naming every team which had an overall GPA of 2.8 or above to its academic All-American list, the CSCAA identified 122 women's team, 78 of which were Division III, and 78 men's teams, 38 of which were Division III, as academic All-American. For the women, Wesleyan's 3.69 was tops nationally, followed by Salisbury St. (3.672) and South Carolina (3.605). On the men's side, Macalaster (Div. III, 3.72), Hendrix (Div. III, 3.70), Georgetown (Div. I, 3.44), Drury (Div. II, 3.36), Emory (Div. III, 3.36) and Wesleyan (3.36) led the nation. Thus, Wesleyan was tied for third nationally among Division III colleges.
Wesleyan's men's team, which went 5-5 in dual meets and placed eighth in the NESCAC, had 14 individual contribute to the team's GPA. In addition, Josh Walker '01, with a 4.00 GPA, and Dan Fisher '01, with a 3.83 GPA, qualified individually for academic All-American honors. To be eligible, an individual must have a 3.50 GPA and have met the national "B" cut qualifying standard for their NCAA Division. The Wesleyan women, who posted a 4-7 dual-meet record and placed ninth in the NESCAC, had 17 individuals on the team.
During the fall, 2000, semester, Wesleyan's men's and women's teams both ranked fourth in Division III for GPA with a 3.309 and a 3.478 GPA, respectively. Both teams were fifth overall nationally during the fall.
In recent years, the men's and women's cross-country teams at Wesleyan have both been cited by their national organization as academic All-American teams and the 2000-01 wrestling team was ranked third in the country for team GPA by the National Wrestling Coaches Association for its scholar All-American recognition.
