The Wesleyan women's volleyball team got 30 kills from Eliza Allen '03 and 23 kills from tournament MVP Alexis Keeler '02 en route to a 3-1 victory over M.I.T. in the championship match of the ECAC North Region Division III Tournament, hosted by Middlebury College over the weekend of Nov. 10-11. That victory averaged a loss to M.I.T. in the opening round of the 1999 ECAC tournament, held at Bates College.
In gaining MVP laurels, Keeler finished the tournament with 55 kills, a 32.0 hitting percentage, 10 aces, 19 blocks and 30 digs over 12 games. Wesleyan defeated Brandeis, 3-2 (23-21, 5-15, 14-16, 15-7, 15-10) in the first round before knocking off top-seeded and host Middlebury in the semi- finals, 3-0 (15-6, 15-7, 15-4). Pitted against #7 seed M.I.T. in the finals, Wesleyan, seeded #5, won 15-10, 9-15, 15-11, 17-15. It was the second time this season Wesleyan defeated M.I.T., taking a 3-2 decision at M.I.T. during the M.I.T. Invitational back in September.
A number of team records fell during the 2000 season. With a 27-11 record, the Cardinals eclipsed the mark for wins in a season, set in 1991 (24-11). Keeler collected 520 kills and 101 aces, both seasonal marks, while Christina Fucci '02, with 1,512 assists, and Laura Cox '04, with 536 digs, also set standards for seasonal play. Eliza Allen '03, ranked among the national leaders for hitting percentage, had a 37.3 figure, the best ever by a Wesleyan player.
